John Deere LA175

Review

The John Deere LA175 is the largest of the 100 series of mowers produced by JD for 2 years from 2008 to 2010 when production moved to the new ‘100’ series which is denoted with a ‘D’ in front of its number. Smaller riding mowers in this series include the John Deere LA165 lawn mower and the John Deere LA105 garden tractor. The JD LA175 naturally has the largest engine in this entire 100 series of mowers. Its Briggs and Stratton V-twin engine has 26 hp. It has a displacement of 0. 724 liters (44 cu in) and is kept from getting too hot by an air-cooling system. An air filter of paper and foam elements is used to purify the air intake. Interestingly, this Briggs and Stratton engine is also an Extended Life Series (ELS) engine that will keep running much longer than similar engines made by the competition.

Grass is cut by the John Deere LA175 using its 54-inch deck which has been constructed from 11-gauge steel for durability. Conveniently, the mower deck has a built-in washdown port that a garden hose can be attached to to give it a good clean. Using the JD LA175 for long periods of time is not too stressful for the operator thanks to its high-back seat with built-in lumbar adjustment (although rest periods are always recommended).

The wheels on the John Deere LA175 are large enough to spread its 251kg weight evenly without leaving large thread marks. The rear tires measure 22×9. 5-12 (22-inch diameter, 9. 5-inch wide, 12-inch rim diameter) and the front wheels measure 16×6. 5-8 (16-inch diameter, 6. 5 inches wide, 8 inches rim diameter). Power from the JD LA175 engine is delivered to the wheels via a Tuff Torq K46 hydrostatic transmission. This makes it an automatic mower without the need to constantly change gear.
