The John Deere GT262 spectacés is the improved version of the John Deere GT242. Although both spectats are similar in many aspects, the JD GT262 is different especially due to the size and power of its engine. This is a FC540V Kawasaki that provides the 1st power horsepower to boost it and turn the cup of the corteped. This 1 cylinder engine is natural aspiration and air refrigerated. The engine power is transferred to the wheels thanks to a 6-speed gear transmission. This transmission provides the corteped with a wide range of speeds when moving forward and reverse.
The electrical force of the John Deere GT262 activates the cutting platform that can vary from 38 inches of cutting width to 54 inches of cutting width. However, it should be observed that if you are using a larger cutting cover, then it is more likely to hear the engine if you are cutting the very long or wet grass. Therefore, try to use the largest cut platforms only in short and dry grass.
The John Deere GT262 is one of the first “GT” series. If you are looking for newer models of the ‘GT’ series, then you should take a look at the John Deere GT235 or the John Deere GT245. For those interested in buying the JD GT262, they will find that it is the most suitable for cutting grass areas of 2-5 acres of size. When I bought this tractor in 2013, I went to a JD dealership with all the intention of buying a new L or E series. I had just received in a trade. I ended up buying the GT262 for $ 1, 400 (they had cleaned it and reviewed very well) and I have not regretted. The only problem I have had was my daughter playing with the light switch, leaving her on and exhausting the battery a couple of times. It is one of those things that are no longer done as before. I moved to a new house (for me) a few years ago and it turns out that my neighbor has exactly the same tractor, but a newer year. He is a veteran and has had his for more than 20 years, so if I ever have a question about something or I need help during a service, blade change, he is right next to him. It also has wheels and rear counterweights, as well as a plow that I can connect. 10/10 I would recommend it!
I use this machine throughout the year in the north of the state of New York. Cut around 2 acres, and snow blow a 300 ‘long entry into winter. Blower is driven by Correa, so it has a difficult time in wet or heavy snow. Do my best to keep the machine, regular oil and filter, fuel filter, etc. The machine remains in the garage, so it is well preserved. Now I have a problem with the loading light that remains on. I am not sure how to remove the regulator, together behind the steel column by the dashboard. It does not seem to have any access.
I bought my GT262 used in 2014 for $ 350. Since then I have replaced all the roof wheels, blades, a deck pulley, all belts, seat, accelerator handle, steering gear and bushings, repaired some cables, regulatorvoltage, clean carburetor, drums, battery cable to the starter and replaced that stupid circuit plate on the ignition switch (Deer’s very expensive).
Even after all repairs and problem solving time I am very happy with the tractor. Now start with difficulty sometimes, but once there is no problems there are no problems. I don’t have much money so fixing something old is easier for the portfolio than a new deere; It also gives me something to do in winter.
Great turn. The platform is easy to lift. Good power. Easy to direct. Great fuel consumption. Cut very well. Easy to go up and down. Comfortable seat. The cover is easy to remove and install. Six marches. Remove the roof strap, put it in 2nd and look how the children drive it through the garden.
Bought New in Idaho in 1995 and used since then. It always starts and works well, as well as mowing very well. I also had a problem with the difficult start and turned out that the accelerator cable slid and was not opening the carburetor correctly. I finally fixed it with a simple adjustment and now start easily. It is not bad for a machine that is 24 years old (I have always changed filters and oil). By the way, I sold a JD 110 to buy the GT262 – and recovered 95% of the money of 110 – the JD maintains its value!
This is a great cutter. I have 0 complaints about the cutting platform. It is not a great launch.
Lanzanieves is too heavy for the tractor even though it is of a single stage. The engine has more than enough to operate the blower, but the belt transmission system cannot handle it – the straps are not suitable for 90 ° turns and reverse curves. You have to take care of it or change the straps often. The unique stage requires a certain mass of snow to push it out of the duct, so there is a very fine line between overloading the belt and throwing the snow at a decent distance.
Said all this, I live in an area that receives 14 ′ to 18 ′ from snowfall every year. The battery at the end of my entrance path is regularly approaching 10 ′ high at the end of winter. I managed with this machine for 17 years and my son is now using it for his much shorter entrance path. So someone living in an area with more moderate snowfalls could find it quite suitable.
Now I have replaced it with a little Kubota of the B series, which is a much better removes. But the Deere is much better corteped. I just can’t win …
Everything is driven by Correa. The clutch is simply a slack adjustment in the transmission strap, so a precise adjustment for soft operation is required.
The plastic accelerator command rots with UV rays and breaks after one year or so.
Most of my complaints revolve around the launch of a single stage:
It does not take care of the hills very when combined with the launch. Even with chains and 4 pesos of a suitcase in the back. It would have really benefited from a differential blockade.
The plastic tensioning pulleys of the quittings do not last long.
Lanzanieve transmission straps do not last long. I passed at least 2 per season (700 ′ road + large parking area).
The launch is of a single stage and is easily stuck in wet snow conditions. Even in dry conditions, it does not blow very far unless the snow is deep or the displacement speed is high.
The front axle is not strong enough for the weight of the launch. The axis tube was broken after a few years. I welded it again with additional reinforcements and it was enough. I understand that the later years had a stronger and stronger redesigned front axle.
The button that releases the elevation arm has a tendency to freeze in its place. Similarly, the optional cable of the remote parachute deflector also tends to freeze in place.
Reinforcement steel plate under the rear plastic to support a 12V winch. I originally added the winch to get the tractor when I was stuck blowing snow. He saved me many back pain. However, the winch has been used for many other tasks, including the drag of heavy trunks and woods (lift the front edge of the ground and only have to drag the back) and pulling my son 1/4 tona winter trench.
I replaced all the plastic pulleys of the launching with others of steel. Adjusted the angle of the right tensioning pulley to minimize the torsion of the belt.
I added a removable soft booth for use in winter, keeping snow blowing out of my face.
Added work lights in the front of the cabin to remove snow (existing headlights were useless for this application).
There are no complaints, my children threw a car with him when they were little for hours and hours. It is not known how many hours in my spectacle. Cut more acre for 18 years still begins.
Made all regular maintenance and repairs. He has always been in garage.

In response to Julius, check the ventilation hole in the gas lid. It can be covered or restricted. You may have to check the ventilation hole of the inner seal on the gas lid, too.
I have been very satisfied with this machine. If the engine exploded, it would change it. If the passee exploded … I would buy an X540 and stay with it. Thanks to this machine I am convinced of the John Deere products. He is currently 14 years old and I have not had problems to get pieces, even little known pieces (the block that holds the elevation mechanism took 3 days to get, days, not months).
In general, I am very satisfied with this machine. In 3 years I have needed to buy 2 guide wheels, 1 battery, 6 rooms of oil and 6 filters.
I would buy this machine again in a heartbeat. It is not so expensive to buy or maintain.
