John Deere SST18

Review

The John Deere SST18 mower is the largest of the 3 models in the “SST” series. If you’re wondering what SST stands for, it’s actually pretty straightforward. Refers to Spin Steer technology. This is just a fancy way of saying that they have built differential steering into the mower so that you have a zero turning radius. This makes the JD SST18 incredibly useful if you have a garden with lots of small patches of grass that need to be cut. Differential steering works very simply; when you lock the wheel in a certain direction, the rear wheel in the center of the turn is also locked while the outside wheel continues to spin, allowing you to complete a turn with a 0 m (0 in) radius.

The John Deere SST18 mower gets its power from a Briggs and Stratton designed and built V-twin engine that gives the mower 18 horsepower to play with. The engine is air cooled. The wheels are powered via a hydrostatic transmission via Twin Touch pedals, which means there’s no need to change gear, just step on the forward or reverse pedal to accelerate. The JD SST18 not only has a zero turning radius, but also has power steering so that your arms won’t get tired even after operating it continuously for many hours.

The John Deere SST18 uses a 48-inch cutting deck. The total weight of the machine is 298 kg (658 lbs), which may seem high for a John Deere mower, but it’s only because of all the bells and whistles that have been added, like power steering and differential steering. This machine is compatible with many different attachments such as snow throwers, blades, harrows, a rear bagger, and a utility cart. If you’re looking for smaller models, check out the John Deere SST15 and John Deere SST16.
